The Prestonwood Basketball League provides children with a safe environment to improve their knowledge and skill in the great game of basketball. Our NCAA League encompasses grades Pre-K thru 2nd grade divisions. These divisions play cross-court games on lower goals that are age-appropriate. We utilize certified referees to call the games. No score is kept at this level, and no league champions are recognized.

Our NBA League encompasses our grades 3rd–6th grade divisions. These divisions utilize the full court, use certified referees, utilize regulation goal heights, keep score, provide standings and in general present a situation that could involve competitive pressure.  An end-of-season single elimination tournament is played to crown a champion of each division. Trophies are given to each player on the first- and second-place teams. We allow formed teams at every level. Some players will come in on a pre-existing team while others will come individually. We encourage both and strive to create a balanced and highly competitive league.

Leagues and Divisions

NCAA League

The NCAA division plays cross-court games on our portable goals. Each team is given one 60 minute practice a week on half of their cross-court. Coaches must complete all team registration requirements before they can select a practice day and time.  This is done on a first come, first serve basis.

NCAA Goal Height

  • The Pre-K boys and Pre-K–K girls’ divisions play at the lowest setting (6’6”).
  • The Kindergarten boys division uses the 1st notch (7’4”).
  • The 1st Grade boys and girls division use the 2nd notch (7’9”).
  • The 2nd Grade boys and girls division uses the 3rd notch (8'3").

If divisions are combined, the goal height of the younger division will be used.

NBA League

The NBA division plays their games full court. The 3rd Grade Boys and the 3rd-4th Grade Girls play on 9' goals (4th Girls may be moved up to 9.5' if not combined with 3rd Grade girls). For practice, each team is given one practice a week for one hour on a half court.

NBA Goal Height

The 3rd Grade Boys and the 3rd and 4th Grade Girls will play on 9' Goals.  All other NBA divisions play on 10' goals.

Note: Grades could be combined if there are not enough teams signed up in a division. Only 2 grades will be combined but they will not be combined with NCAA division teams. This is likely to happen with the 3rd and 4th grade girls along with the 5th and 6th grade girls but we will keep them separate if at all possible. It is very unlikely that we would opt to combine the 4th and 5th grade girls this season as it would keep the 4th graders as the younger group for a second season in a row.

Age-Determining Dates

Players must play in the division of their current grade unless they are approved by the league to play up a grade level. Players are not allowed to play down a grade. The age determining dates are only used to determine if a player is too old to play with his or her grade and must play up a grade division. The age determining dates are in line with UIL and TAPPS rules which govern most school athletics in the state of Texas. Players who do not meet the division criteria for eligibility are not eligible to participate in that division and must play up. There is no appeal available to the parents nor opportunity for board review. When two grades are combined to form one division, the higher (older) grade is used for age determination.

Practices

Each team will have one practice a week that will include one hour of court time in the Sports & Fitness Center at Prestonwood. Coaches will schedule their practice time after meeting the registration requirements, please see the Coach Information section for all required items.
Practice Days: Sunday, Monday and Thursday
Practice Sign Up Steps
Parents need to contact their coach for practice details. If you are a coach, click on the coach page link under helpful links for more details on how to request a practice time. Coaches must complete registration requirements before requesting a practice time. If additional practice time is desired, the coach will have to schedule that on his own at a location other than Prestonwood.

Spiritual Development

In keeping with the mission of PSO, PSO Basketball is committed to introducing Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord to our players and mentoring them in the Christian life by the example set by our coaches and league officials. To that end, coaches will be supplied with devotionals that will be shared weekly with their players. Additionally, prayer will be common at practices and games. The Gospel will also be presented to all players 7 and older at our NBA clinic.  Players will have a chance to respond to Christ's call on their lives at the end of the Gospel presentation.

Practice Night Devotions

Each team is required to have a devotion before or after each practice. We will use the FCA Coach app please down load and create a account.  If your coach or a team representative is not having a devotion time at practice each week, please contact Elgin Hollins at ehollins@prestonwood.org.

Coaching Application

Head coaches must register online for free and submit an online volunteer background check. When you complete the head coach registration process, you will be able to send a registration e-mail to your team with a code that will allow the parents of your players to register for your team. Please read all of the information on the Coach Registration Page.

New assistant coaches must also submit a background check through the process described above for head coaches. Please read all of the information on the Coaches Page.

Coaches’ Meeting

Coaches will be required to attend a coaches’ meeting where a clear message will be provided regarding the mission of the PSO Basketball League, league rules, expectations, etc. All coaches will be expected to attend and sign a statement of understanding. The PSO Basketball meeting dates are listed on the Key Dates page.

Coaching Clinic

Before the season starts, if there is enough interest, we will conduct an optional coaching clinic for all coaches in our league. This clinic does not replace (and is in addition to) the mandatory coaches’ meeting described above.  During this clinic, we will provide suggested drills, plays, strategy, and other tips to help you be the best coach, leader, and mentor possible for the children and their families. The coaching clinic will be held in November. The date has not been set at this time.

Post-Season Tournament

There will be a post-season tournament in the NBA (grades 3–6) divisions. Participation in this tournament is an added bonus and not a right. It is not guaranteed that all teams will make it into the tournament (at least four teams from each division will qualify for the post-season tournament but every effort will be made to include all teams if space permits). Seeding in this tournament will be determined based on win/loss records during the regular season. In the event of ties, the online standings may not be correct (please check the official rules for tie-breaker rules).  The tournament is a single-elimination tournament.

Most, if not all, games will be played at Prestonwood Baptist Church.
